Since it was first introduced in the 1940s, hydraulic fracturing has been regulated by individual states. Each state has its own standards, but in general, laws and regulations are put into place to:

    • Oversee well construction and site design
    • Protect drinking water
    • Test wells and track well-plugging
    • Monitor drilling procedures
    • Oversee handling of materials and waste
