    Introduction to Chemical Use

If you live near a well site that is engaged in hydraulic fracturing, you may have concerns about the use of chemicals in the fluids involved.

Different chemicals are used for various reasons in the fracturing process, so it’s important to understand not only the chemical names, but also their individual purposes.

Among other things, chemicals in fracturing fluids are used to:

    • Dissolve minerals
    • Prevent bacterial growth
    • Act as a clay stabilizer
    • Prevent corrosion of well casing
    • Prevent scale deposits in pipe
